I neglected to address your outrage about the houses that are on a street that borders the former Dachau camp. For 28 years after the camp was liberated, the former SS garrison next door was occupied by American soldiers. <br /><br />For the first three years after the camp was liberated, the former SS garrison was filled with Jewish survivors who were paid witnesses at the war crimes trials held at Dachau. The barracks were occupied by 30,000 German war criminals who were awaiting trial at Nuremberg and Dachau. <br /><br />German citizens in the town of Dachau were evicted and their homes were occupied by Jewish survivors and American Army officers. Some of the Jews settled permanently in Dachau. <br /><br />Dachau was a small village with a population of 13,000. New homes were needed for the Americans and the Jews who stayed at Dachau for the next 28 years. <br /><br />From 1948 to 1964, the former Dachau camp was occupied by ethnic Germans who had been expelled from the Sudetenland in what is now the Czech Republic. These people couldn&#39;t afford the new houses built next to the camp, but they could look at them and dream about the homes that they lost when 12 to 18 million ethnic Germans were expelled in the ethnic cleansing that was ordered during the Potsdam Conference.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10226669.post-15758489509964707672009-10-06T10:55:22.487-04:002009-10-06T10:55:22.487-04:00You are correct that the citizens of Dachau had “full knowledge” of what went on in the Dachau concentration camp. Citizens of the town worked in the factories at the camp, alongside the inmates. The prisoners went to town regularly to pick up bread from the bakeries and to work in seven different locations in the town. The people in the town sent packages to the prisoners through the regular mail. A few prisoners lived in the town and worked in the homes of the citizens. <br /><br />What the people in the town didn’t know was the atrocity stories told by the Jews who had been in the camp for only two months before it was liberated; some had been there for only two weeks or two days. One group of Jewish prisoners arrived just the day before the camp was liberated. These were Jews who had survived Auschwitz and had been brought to work in the sub-camps of Dachau. Just before the camp was liberated, the Jews in the sub-camps were brought to the main camp. A few Jewish mothers with babies arrived on a train on the day after the camp was liberated; their train had been delayed because it was bombed by American planes. Another train had arrived at Dachau two days before the camp was liberated; the train had taken 20 days to travel 220 miles because the tracks had been bombed. The train had been strafed by American planes and prisoners had been killed by American bullets. <br /><br />After the concentration camps were set up in Germany, common criminals in the prisons were brought to the camps so that they could work. Criminals who had been tried, convicted and condemned to death were brought to Dachau and the other camps in Germany to be executed, but the number of executions was nowhere near a quarter of a million. <br /><br />A few Soviet prisoners of war were executed because they were Communist Commissars. They were political prisoners, not ordinary soldiers.<br /><br />The prisoners arrived at Dachau mostly in small groups after they were arrested as partisans, insurgents or resistance fighters who were fighting in violation of the Geneva Convention. There was one American in the OSS who was captured while wearing civilian clothes and helping the French resistance in violation of the Geneva Convention. At least 6 British spies were among the inmates at Dachau. <br /><br />Cremation ovens do not cause ashes to rain down. Half of all the deaths in the camp occurred in the last 5 months that the camp was open, including 2,226 prisoners who died in May 1945, after the camp was liberated. These deaths were caused by a typhus epidemic. America had a vaccine for typhus, but the Germans had not yet developed a vaccine. If American had sent typhus vaccine to Dachau, there were have been 15,000 deaths in 12 years, not 31,950.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
